African Spurred Tortoise
Geochelone sulcata
or
Centrochelys sulcata

Tortoise or turtle?  A tortoise generally has flat stumpy feet to walk on land whereas most turtles have webbed feet as they tend to live in and out of the water.

The Spurred tortoise is all about defense.  Not only does it carry a heavily armored shell around but when it pulls its head and feet inside, large hardened spurs on the legs stick out from the holes of the shell.  This prevents even the most tenacious predator from getting at the legs and feet.

The largest continental tortoise in the world and the third largest species in the world behind the Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises, the Spurred tortoise can reach shell lengths of 2-3 feet and can weigh between 100-200 pounds!
