Blue and Gold Macaw
Ara ararauna
 This
bird gets its name from the bright blue feathers on
its back, wings and tail and from the golden yellow feathers on chest and
underside. It also has green feathers on the forehead and white skin on
the sides of its face with small black facial feathers in a pattern resembling a
tattoo. Its large black beak can be used to grasp things like food or to
help the bird climb. The beak is extremely powerful and can be used to
crack open the hardest nuts to eat and yet gentle enough to carefully pick fruit
and even peal it. The tongue is almost like a finger as it moves food
around to reposition it so the lower beak can crack or scoop the food out.
Macaws are very loud and can make high pitched screeches but can also mimic
words.
