Blue-tongued Skink
Tiliqua scincoides

This lizard gets its name from you guessed it, a blue tongue.  When threatened, it will stick out its bright blue tongue and flatten it, making it very wide and noticeable.  This flash of blue can startle and ward off predators.

The skink's smooth scales and stubby legs allow it to move smoothly over the ground in a variety of habitats in Northern Australia including woodlands, grasslands, and semi-desert environments.  As an omnivore, it eats insects, small animals, and a variety of plants including flowers, leaves, and fruit.
