Boa constrictor

Boa constrictor

The common Boa constrictor is a highly adaptable snake making its natural home through all of Central and South America.  While most think of the boa living in the branches of trees in tropical rainforests, it also lives in open savannah, deserts and even farmer's fields in underground holes.

Boas are not venomous.  As its name implies, it is a constrictor, meaning that when it strikes its prey, it coils its body around the prey.  Every time the prey exhales, it constricts a little tighter until the prey finally suffocates.  Boas eat a variety of prey including rodents (rats and even cavi's which are as large as dogs), birds, bats, opossums, etc.
