Chinchilla

Chinchilla lanigera

One of the softest animals in the world, the thick fur of the chinchilla helps it to adapt to the cold wind environment of the Andes Mountains in South America.  As a mountain rodent, they are very agile with their tiny feet and kangaroo-like back legs which allow them to jump 5 ft.! They are also nocturnal (active at night) and have adaptations such as large eyes, long whiskers and large ears to be able to live in the darkness.
