American Crow

Corvus brachyrhynchos

This highly intelligent bird is perhaps one of the most misunderstood.  While considered a pest by people, especially farmers, measures have been attempted by people to scare away crows with, you guessed it, scarecrows.  Crows were more likely curious about the scarecrow than afraid of it.  In the early 1900's crows were hunted and killed by the tens of thousands.  However, this resilient and highly adaptable bird has continually bounced back.  As an omnivore, the crow eats a varied diet of grains, fruits, and is an active hunter of small prey.  It is also a scavenger, not only of carcasses, but also human rubbish.  Crows are known to use tools to access food, have a reputation as problem solvers, and can even mimic sounds of other animals and even people.  The intelligence of crows is easily on par with parrots.
