Degu

Octodon degus

Degus come from the mountainous regions of Chile in South America and are great jumpers and climbers.  They have the unique ability among mammals in that if caught by a predator (or over excited person), they can actually break off their own tail, similar to some lizards.  Unlike lizards, however, their tail won't grow back. They are related to chinchillas and guinea pigs.
