Domesticated Ferret

Mustela putorius furo

While they may look exotic, ferrets have been domesticated for nearly 2,500 years.  Their long flexible bodies are adaptations that allow them to hunt animals in underground tunnels.  As a result, ferrets have helped people hunt animals like rabbits, were rat catchers on early ships that sailed to America, and were even trained to run electrical wiring up existing walls in the old days!  In America today, the hardest work most ferrets do is getting in to trouble and having a lot of fun as a popular pet.   If a ferret can fit its head through a hole, it can crawl its entire body through as well!
