Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Gromphadorhina portentosa

This is one of the larger species of roach reaching lengths of 3 inches.  It gets its name from the hissing sound it makes when it is disturbed.  The hiss is made by forcing air out small holes called spiracles.  Roaches have an important job in that they are decomposers, which mean they help to get rid of dead, decaying things by eating it.  It's a dirty job, but something's got to do it!
