Mealy
Amazon Parrot
Amazona farinosa
This nearly all green parrot gets its name from the whitish colored tinge down
its neck and back giving it the appearance of being covered with a thin dusting
of flour or “meal.” The Mealy is generally the largest of the Amazon-type
parrots reaching sizes of a small macaw. While it is called an Amazon Parrot,
its range extends beyond the Amazon River Basin in South America into the
rainforests of Central America and southern Mexico as well. Some have a patch of
light blue feathers on the forehead and light purple feathers on the head. On
the tips of the green wings, there are also red and blue tipped feathers.
Mealys are considered the gentle giants of the Amazon parrots for their calm and
relaxed nature.
