Red-tailed Hawk

Buteo jamaicensis

This medium sized bird of prey uses it keen eyesight (eyes like a hawk!) to locate prey (rabbits, squirrels, mice, rats, birds, etc.) usually from a lofty vantage point such as the top of a fence post, telephone pole, or tree.  When it flies down, it catches the prey with its sharp talons, grasps the animal and flies to a safe location to tear it apart with its hooked beak.  Like owls, the hawk cannot digest hair and bones so it will cough up a pellet.  When you dissect a hawk pellet, you can compare the bones in the pellets to find what kind of animals the hawk is eating.
