Volunteer Opportunities with Animalia

Position Descriptions:

Education Outreach:  If you are looking to help spread the word and are willing to be in front of a crowd, this is just your thing!  Volunteers will be trained how to handle a variety of animals (reptiles, birds, mammals) to assist ANIMALIA staff during Education Outreach Programs. Volunteers are required to learn a diverse array of background information on a variety of animals and their interrelationships in the animal kingdom.

Animal Care: It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it!  It is also very rewarding to provide basic animal care including cleaning, feeding, and enrichment for ANIMALIA’s numerous small mammals, reptiles, and birds.  Some animal contact is involved.  Keeping our animal enclosures clean is a high priority as it can impact the health and well being of our animals.

Socialization:  Since most of our animals are used in Education Outreach Programs, they need regular socialization in order to be comfortable around people.  This hands-on position requires the careful and attentive interaction with our animals both indoors and outdoors.  This is much more than just “playing” with the animals.  Each social interaction has a point and purpose to fulfill.

Administrative tasks:  You love animals, but perhaps you aren’t necessarily interested in being that hands on with them.  That’s OK.  You likely have other skills that can support the efforts of ANIMALIA.  This position does require basic computer skills.  You will have the opportunity to update animal records, research information for animal fact sheets, help with promotional mailings...

Facility Maintenance: For the handy person who likes to build and fix things, this is the position for you!  The wear and tear that animals exert on their housing is exceptional and sometimes things need to be repaired or built anew.  Whether it’s constructing an outdoor animal enclosure, installing a perch, stringing together wire mesh, painting a wall, or clearing a floor drain, there are always things to do.

Internship Opportunities with Animalia

Internships with Animalia, while unpaid, offer college/university students broad experience in animal care and handling, education outreach, and canine behavior and well-being.

Interns have the opportunity to develop or further skills in public speaking and interaction while engaging a diverse audience in Animalia’s Education Outreach Programs.  Interns will be trained how to handle a variety of animals (reptiles, birds, mammals) for education presentations. As a working and learning internship, Interns are required to learn a diverse array of background information on a variety of animals and their interrelationships in the animal kingdom.

Working with our on-staff Zoologist, Interns will provide basic animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and record keeping.  Animalia internships may also include experience in animal training, behavior, socialization, exhibit design, and basic medical care.

Interns will work with our Certified Behaviorist to learn to recognize the diverse behaviors of dogs through modern methods and practices.  Interns have the opportunity to learn dog training techniques utilizing positive reinforcement.
