While dogs come in all shapes and sizes, they are directly descended from wolves and share over 99% of their genetic makeup.  However, dogs and wolves are quite different.  Dogs, as the earliest domesticated animal, have been bred under the direction of humans for tens of thousands of years.  By humans artificially selecting the traits they want in dogs, this has led to hundreds of breeds that have helped humans in many ways for millennia.
